Vitamin A Deficiency and the Lung.

2018

Vitamin A (all-trans-retinol) is a fat-soluble micronutrient which together with its natural derivatives and synthetic analogues constitutes the group of retinoids. They are involved in a wide range of physiological processes such as embryonic development, vision, immunity and cellular differentiation and proliferation. Retinoic acid (RA) is the main active form of vitamin A and multiple genes respond to RA signalling through transcriptional and non-transcriptional mechanisms. Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) is a remarkable public health problem. An adequate vitamin A intake is required in early lung development, alveolar formation, tissue maintenance and regeneration. In fact, chronic VAD has b…

Advances in asthma pathophysiology: stepping forward from the Maurizio Vignola experience

2015

Maurizio Vignola was a superb and innovative researcher, who wrote seminal papers on the biology of airway epithelium in asthma. Inflammation and remodelling were the main topics of his research, mostly conducted in biopsy specimens from patients with asthma of variable severity, encompassing the entire spectrum of the disease from mild to severe asthma. His observations contributed to define the biology of asthma as we know it today, and opened the way to the personalised treatment of asthma. His group has successfully continued to investigate the biology and clinical aspects of bronchial asthma, with major interest in the clinical use of biomarkers to monitor disease activity, and in the …

Best Practice in Health Care

2021

This book aims to disseminate and review the latest interdisciplinary medical knowledge to provide information on best clinical practice for difficult-to-treat conditions. The chapters address various aspects and approaches to the management of medical conditions that are not fully understood. This is exemplified by complex immune and inflammatory interactions in cancer development and survival-prolonging repeat surgery for pulmonary metastases or advances in craniotomy techniques for intracranial hemorrhage. Other chapters address the quality of life of patients after pyeloplasty, parathyroidectomy, or physically debilitating ankylosing spondylitis. Additional chapters address primary cili…

Erythropoietin and the heart: physiological effects and the therapeutic perspective.

2014

Erythropoietin (Epo) has been thought to act exclusively on erythroid progenitor cells. The identification of Epo receptor (EpoR) in non-haematopoietic cells and tissues including neurons, astrocytes, microglia, immune cells, cancer cell lines, endothelial cells, bone marrow stromal cells, as well as cells of myocardium, reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, kidney, pancreas and skeletal muscle indicates that Epo has pleiotropic actions. Epo shows signals through protein kinases, anti-apoptotic proteins and transcription factors. In light of interest of administering recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEpo) and its analogues for limiting infarct size and left ventricular (LV) remodel…

Single and Synergistic Effects of Type 2 Cytokines on Eosinophils and Asthma Hallmarks

2020

Abstract The type 2 cytokines IL-5, IL-13, and IL-4 play an important role in the induction and progression of asthma. According to the Global Initiative for Asthma guidelines, blood eosinophil numbers are one marker that helps to guide treatment decisions in patients suffering from severe forms of asthma. Effects of type 2 cytokines were analyzed, alone or in combination, on eosinophils in blood and other compartments and on the development of asthma symptoms. C57BL/6 mice received a single intranasal application of equimolar amounts of IL-5, IL-13, and IL-4, alone or in combination. Numbers, activation state, and migratory behavior of eosinophils in bone marrow (BM), blood, lung, and bron…
